Beautiful Functional

"...a man should be able to leave his home with nothing more than the clothing on his back and feel like he left nothing behind." --Thoreau

There is a design philosophy in almost everything.  Few people in the "developed" world leave the house without wearing shoes.  These shoes rule... these shoes suck, etc. but most people can not explain their design philosophy whether people or shoes.  Oh there may be opinions, like little ponies they are probably magic.  Begin the day with a good hat and shoes.  What comes between is anybody's guess, but let us say it is a good tool. Ponies do not need hats or tools.

For the rest of us, we are talking knife design here.  Like any design, we get into relationships between form and function.  I had never heard of Les Stroud, but ran into the name while drooling over Helleknives... both company and especially product design and philosophy.  The idea is to make it to Portland carrying nothing but a day pack and a bicycle (if the cycle is needed to carry you). The cutting edge is capable of science-fiction sharp for real.

Most of us live in really dumb houses, clothes and shoes. Beautiful?  Functional?  Maybe.  But those definitions are changing.  Where do we sleep and how do we get around?  How do we go from charging station to field?  Has not changed much in the 50 years since Keds and kids, but who decided we needed phones you could carry everywhere that took pictures?  And wait until Graphine hits the scene!  Something was dropped on the forest floor that shifted a paradigm.

Could this artifact have been seeded deliberately?

Just got back from a camping trip to the Teton forest.  J was talking about buying some property, building a yurt for the immediate needs before building an underground green house and a self-sustaining house like an earth ship.

The thing that makes me hesitate is health insurance.....

Speaking of Earth Ships, check out some of the creations from Mark Morford's trip to Burning Man.

If I still had my youth and energy, I'd have to consider building something.

As it is...gonna have some titanium patches planted in my body tomorrow to fix my rib cage. Kind scared about it -- but trying to stay positive.

Had an interview in Portland a few weeks back.  They haven't gotten back to me so it seems that they don't want me and don't feel the need to extend me the professional courtesy to provide me with a formal rejection.....sigh.

Like the city but we don't like cities anymore and it would be an adjustment.  Enjoyed the beer.  Cascade Brewing had very lovely Belgium-style sours.   And, in Hood River, Logsdon Farmhouse Beers were extraordinary.

this is the longest i have lived in a city since 1984 when i lived in seattle for a few years.  and it's been 5 weeks.  we're in st.johns which is almost its own town, not just a neighborhood.  on the end of the peninsula where the willamette meets the columbia.  wonderful parks walking distance.  bike lanes and trails, etc.  yeah i am not advocating it for anyone, but for a city it's great.  the baby in the last photo is Mirabel, born 4.5 days ago.

Not to worry BO... i got a titanium watch and a heart valve... and so far, both are holding up fine.  Used to get the super-beegees about surgery... until they REALLY fucked me up.  Now... well- don't much give a shit whether I wake up or not.  I aint really nutz about flying to Arizona this Oct..  Not from fear of flying (which I have)... but really do not want to participate in any of that Nazi "security" bullshit.  And if you have a beard... you always get the "special treatment."

Depressing to read on the Treehugger site that GSHPs are largely a scam... and that poly insulation is nasty.  Seems like there isn't enough time to sort out the scams and bullshit.  Now beginning to admire simple low-tech designs... like knives and bicycles.

With two titanium hips I always get the pat-down/x-ray treatment when I fly.....and I look less like an outlier than Waldo does.   Surgery isn't to be taken lightly but getting rid of the pain will be worth it.

Welcome the world, Mirabel!  I wish I could do more than just vacate a space for you kids... but it is/was all I could do to avoid being swallowed by the evil empire.  Permaculture is getting great traction among the young folk.  Wish it could happen better/ faster... but this will have to do.

I was aware of the scam-ology during my stint in the geothermal industry.  The girls along the wall (which is what I called "senior management") insisted on headlining everything with "save 60% on your heating bill."  It didn't take long to figure out it was mostly fiction... and of course I had to answer letters from dissatisfied customers... especially in Canada.

I got into the business because we put a GSHP in our house... and really do not regret it.  For one thing, it was always an adventure when the slumlord's gas furnace kicked on on the first cold day with a WHUMP that shook the building... and I have seen several houses blown to matchsticks the same way.  Of course the "girls" would not even consider safety as a selling point... not even "green" (our investors will think we are a bunch of flakes).  That shook my faith in "capitalism."  And of course, participating in the "financial service" industry's "securitization" scam was the final straw.

Both good ideas driven into the ground because "it's all about the money."
