Life in the Empire

When I was told to choose a book when I was ten from the library in order to write an essay

I chose Brave New World

Actually it changed my perception of how a system can have power beyond the intentions of those who created it.

I was reprimanded and told that this book was not suitable for me.

Gene Rodenbury, his future vision shown in star trek also predicted the end of currency

He also did the first interracial kiss on TV

They never showed an inter-racial kiss until that moment

How weird is that?

Side comment I hate the term inter-racial

we are the same race

we are human beings

maybe I am just too young to understand

Huxley whole insight was everything would be controlled by the system

In the future - if you take the logical extension of the human genome there will come a time when everything about a person can be written prior to conception

Where as Rodenbury shows the dichotomy in human nature where on one hand we are the result of our DNA
and on the other hand we have free will to be greater than the sum of our parts. This is epitomized in the apparent failure of computer scientists creating the conciousness

No matter how advanced our genetic manipulation comes from, although we can manipulate the mechanisms
and physical structure there is no explanation from where conciousness comes

Basically, you can create an android to mimic but it will not be sentient.

I reckon I should write thoughts on this topic on one of the forums here on rbc

I read 1984 and Brave New World when I was 10 - I had older siblings so the books were available at home. Then I started reading every Vonnegut I could get my hands on. ........So it Goes. About the same time my brother bought "Freak Out" by the Mothers of Invention. I was singing Motherly Love and Suzy Creamcheese without knowing what they were about. I think I had no choice but to be a little cynical.

Americans must prepare themselves for a massive collapse in the dollar as investors around the world dump their US assets, a former Bank of England policymaker has warned.

Wow- I'm really sorry it took me so long before I saw this. I would say it's not the "worst-case" scenario... I think it's the ONLY scenario. On the way through youtube, I had a chance to peep the teabaggers take on all this. These people simply do not get it. I've had this conversation dozens of times.

The IRS is stealing my money. YOUR money? show me where it has your picture on it... or your name even. Hmmph... I EARNED it. Well... you performed labor maybe, but once you accepted this imaginary paper... you bought into the "system." And the system doesn't "belong" to you... it doesn't "belong" to anybody. It's just a construct of our imagination... it's all in your mind. It only exists as long as we believe it exists.

huh?

The "conversation" usually stops there.
