Right before we got in the U-Haul and started the trek from Missouri to Washington, we took a walk through our landscaping.  I was weeping by the time we were done.   Damn.....I would really like to be able to see some trees grow more than a few years before the academics drive of out.

Lovely to hear about forest gardening in London.  I always end up leaving a home before the trees close canopy but here the whole garden is canopied by 4 trees of about 20-30m high & many smaller ones.  There's a whole animal kingdom that shares the space here with me over my head - they never have to touch ground.  It's quite challenging finding out what grows in the shade of the tropical heat in sand and is edible.

Forest Gardeners do need to keep branches very much in mind ... this landed in my drive way & very neatly only took out two of the 1.8m fence boards.  The world of small creatures that were cavorting around up there & eventually destroyed one lignin cell wall too many were running around like they'd been hit by a meteorite - or lay squashed where they fell.

In my neck of the woods the Bark Beetle, taking advantage of drought-weakened trees, has wreaked severe damage.  There are many dead trees.  This complicates my choice of a campsite as I really don't want to wake up dead because a tree fell on my tent and I don't relish staying long in an area filled with fuel for wild fires.

The Forest Service can't keep up with selected tree removal and controlled burns to remove the risk due to budget cuts and the priority to protect houses that have been built near/in the forest.
