FBI reviewing Tasering of sleeping man; no charges file

The Associated Press

NORTH BRADDOCK, Pa. - Two North Braddock police officers won't face criminal charges for Tasering a man who was asleep at home. But the FBI will review the incident for possible civil rights violations.

Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala Jr. says county police determined Officers Gerard Kraly and Lukas Laeuricia (loo-REE'-see-uh) didn't commit a crime when they Tasered Shawn Hicks, who was sleeping on his couch.

Police came to Hicks home because they were alerted by a silent security alarm at his home about 2 a.m.

Hicks says the officers Tasered him again after he woke up and showed them ID to prove he lived at the home. Hicks' attorney says he will pursue civil action.

BART cop who shot guy in back is building "taser confusion" defense.

Couple of big problems with that defense:
1) the guy was already on the ground
2) BART cops holster their guns on their dominant side and their tasers on their non-dominant side
3) Glocks weigh about 40 oz, tasers weigh around 7 oz.

But then, Dan White got away with political assassination with the Twinkie Defense so, who knows?

DETROIT (AP) — Amnesty International criticized police in Michigan on Tuesday for using a Taser to subdue a 15-year-old boy who died shortly afterward, saying it illustrates the dangers of the electroshock weapon.

Bay City police answered a disturbance call about 3:40 a.m. Sunday and said an officer used a Taser on Brett Elder after he tried to fight with them. The teen would have turned 16 Tuesday.

Amnesty International's London office issued a statement Tuesday saying the death "reinforces the need for greater caution" before Tasers are distributed more widely.

The headlines alone are worth a trip to THE EXILED. example: wah wah dying like flies (about time).
I like this, WP. Thanks for posting.
yep, sleep well. Sooner or later an American sociopath is gonna get YOU.
Well a homeless man was tasered by police just round the corner from my house I find in the local paper. That's why that helicopter was hovering overhead for half an hour last week.
It seems the poor young man had a six inch knife which he had been seen to look at in the local shop. Armed police were called and gave him instructions which he failed to obey. So there we are.

Oh, here it is, he half-pulled out the knife, didn't say anything or threaten anyone, but the security guard called the police when he left the shop. The firearms police found him in the road nearby and sorted him out. He is on bail while enquiries continue.

Police statement: "Although the man made no threat, it was still a frightening incident for those concerned. There should be no doubt in any resident's mind that anyone found to be carrying an offensive weapon unlawfully will be arrested. We will not tolerate this kind of behaviour and we are working hard to ensure our neighbourhoods are safe places for people to live and work in."

Taser, new weapon of choice against mental health problems. 80 per cent of community tax pays for those helicopters and the police. But the youth projects have all been reigned in, except my daughter's.

You wouldn't believe how quiet it is around here, although it's the school holidays. Cold, raining. Chill in the heart.

Ooh, almost forgot to tell you. They're going to upgrade the cctv in town, isn't that nice. They watch it in another town twelve miles away.
