Life in the Empire

They keep coming out of the woodwork like cockroaches. They eat away at the foundation of civilization. They lie, cheat and steal. They think the world owes them something they don't deserve. They get away with murder.

Who are they?

In case you forgot how whacked-out half of the US really is, check out this shit:
http://www.theodoresworld.net/archives/war_related_news/

...and don't miss "wild thing's" comments. But don't worry... they're "American" first and "conservative" second. whatever that means.
Don't cha just miss these times?...

Are there more fucked people now....or does it seem that way simply because of the availability of a wider news variety? It seems to me when I was young, ( let's get the dinosaurs and christians cavorting references out of the way early), your local news was the thing and your news paper was usually a statewide paper.
It didn't seem there were as many crazies referenced. Maybe the black goo has affected the memories (not entirely impossible, lol). When I was a kid you rode your bike or played outside with only few, if any, trips back home until it started to get dark and you had to be home for dinner.
We didn't lock the front door. We left windows open in the summer. Everybody knew everyone else's
business. We actually had a real functioning community. Now the corner store isn't run by Mr. and Mrs. Whoever, it's a chain or a habeeb. You don't go down town to the movies, or to shop. There are no stores down there, and you'll get your ass shot by a gang or a drugged out crack ho lookin' for money for her/his next fix. Weren't there fewer cops back then, how come there was less crime? Is this ramble makin' any sense?
Makes a lotta sense, LOM.

I don't think there are more fucked people... well there are more everythings... I mean percentage-wise.

There are still small communities... just like you described. I remember when... (oh ZZZZZZZ... gramps is off on another one of his "stories") when the kops would smell yer breath and say... had one too many, eh... give ye a ride home... and hand the keys to yer wife. Or worse... yer old man. Shit- talk about TROUBLE... but not the kind than made anybody any money.

Naw... there weren't that many tweakers then. But there are now, thanx to the "war on drugs" (the drugs won)... which had more to do with suppressing hip-pies than it did with any "dope" shit. Mass-produced. "Economy of scale" Profit profit profit. Yep- same story here in duckberg... downtown is deserted... so the chuckelfucks built... a baseball stadium (which aint working too well)... and now they're talking about... a Casino!

Welcome to Pottersville.
"Pottersville, and how it has transformed all of the people... into unhappy, corrupt and/or amoral people,"

And c'mon... I actually LIKED Habeeb... when I lived in town... and there was still a 7-11. He reminded me of the hurdy-gurdy Italian guy that ran the neighborhood grocery my ol man always talked about... a friendly immigrant guy... eager to get clued into all things he thought were "american." Friendly, that is, once he was convinced you weren't there to rob/ shoot him.
Oh, don't get me wrong, I love my habeeb. He married my best friend after I introduced them, lol.
Clash of cultures, they are divorced now, but still friends.
Maybe it's I miss that little town, the one I grew up in. Maybe it was the way neighbors cared about and for one another. There doesn't seem to be any of that here in N Florida. People keep to them selves. Even if you have lived next to the same people for over 10 years the closest you ever get is to say hello. It's sad and lonely really.
Oh well don't mind me, I'm havin' a tear streaked melt down of sorts today, the boy child came back to visit for a couple of days and has once again flown away from the nest, back to Montana.
Sigh.
I was going to ask what a 'habeeb' was ... -:) Not a term I'm familiar with.

The previous town I stayed in was as you describe LOM. The new town is smaller and when I moved here I also switched my eating/buying policy to buy as much local produce as possible instead of going to the supermarket ... so I've been scouring the town for sources of everything from dog food (from the local abattoir) to firewood & veggies & milk from local farmers. As I have supported local businesses I have found unexpected sources of support for help I need. When people are aware of needing each other I think 'community' comes of it. Modern suburbia though is not the kind of place where you can pick up your milk from a farmer on the way home or have a truckload of wood delivered by the local radiologist who also does you the favour of x-raying your dog if required... that's probably where the break down in community comes from. I am finding this kind of life far less lonely because of that than when I was in a bigger town ... if my company relocates me back to where I came from I will be interested in trying the same methodology for creating 'community' there.
Completely irrelevant to the topic is that in my exploring local expertise I came across an ex-policman (he's now in a wheel chair) master dog trainer on a farm in the neighbouring town. He's got 56 dogs on his farm in various stages of training and trains up police dogs, service dogs, explosives & narcortics dogs, personal protection dogs and ordinary pets. If I can find the money and about 2 months off work he has offered to train me up so that I have a master dog trainer certificate. I live with four dogs and prefer them to most humans ... and retrenchment/ forced early retirement is a very real possibility ... so I've been thinking that it might be a really good basic skill to take with me wherever I end up next. I'd be able to run boarding kennels too because the training covers dog health and care issues too. Next Saturday I'm going for the first of 3 'trial' training sessions to see if it's up my alley or not. I am quite excited about the prospects.....
Sorry to have digressed .... I just needed to tell someone about it all.
That sounds pretty good to me, excellent digression. Very useful skill that, you must have a strong presence there Cal.

As for childer departing, I'm sure I lost my marbles when my little girl went away. Now she lives just down the road, and the future is seeming to coalesce into something approachable.

I live just down and across a bit from this pottery, and used to buy my flowerpots there. I've been living here for twenty years and don't find it friendly. Had a good neighbour to begin with, Mary, who was Irish and splendid. She was a washerwoman, and liked to stand on her back doorstep making various arrangements with God and St Anthony before she pegged the washing out.
actually habeeb in Arabic means friend so put your racial guns away.
Now calling them hajis or rag heads, sand niggers, you get the pic right, that would be a racial slur. if you dont know what something means ask before getting in a huff about it.

Well my friends, I'm going to this conference in the morning, tra la.

Darker My Love Live at the Spanish Moon
BO ain't got no use for the third-worlders flooding into his neighborhood. Seems, all they bring to the party is their penchant for violence, theft, and fucked-up third-world ethics.

Welcome them with open arms? Fuck that. I say send 'em home. If you don't yet have a clue as to why we're being flooded with these 'aliens', why not get one. It isn't as much to do about race as it is about being anti-globalist and Americans have every right to be resentful.

Unfortunately, Habeeb and Jose are destroying your standard of living. You can love 'em for it if you want to. But don't expect everyone to feel the same way.
Ms. Medusa and I are in Tacoma this weekend to run SiteWorks. Have absolutely no nostalgia for T-Town, it has all of the annoyances of a city with none of the benefits.

The whole Greater Seattle/I-5 corridor is annoying. I'm thinking Bo needs to get into a surrogate Westphalia and get away from the teeming concrete conduits.

I don't remember Habeeb or Jose being on the Board of AIG.... In the town I grew up the corner grocer was a Jew, who probably "ruined the economy" for the Wop, who ruined it for the Mick. But then the big box grocery warehouses came in an ruined it for everyone - no more local butcher at the back of the local grocer - and 7-11 and Caseys General Store gas/convenience stores came in to fill the void with cheap stuff sold too expensive without quality meats from the local butcher who would slice up the slab of bologna in whatever thickness you needed. And, while Habeeb or Jose might run the local franchise, I'm pretty sure they aren't major stockholders in the chain.

Individual and collective...like the layers of an onion... a minority... within a majority... that's part of a minority... within a majority... within a minority... etc etc etc...

...monkey waldo cons mancub U to giving him a yellow "degree," etc.
