Maybe Wilhelm Reich was one of a great many intellectuals who gave up on saving us pipsqueaks. We are quite capable of saving ourselves. In fact, we are the ONLY ones capable of saving ourselves. If you just tell the truth, Reich noted, “a thousand arks will carry my word through every flood: It will prevail.” Trouble is, when you’re Ned Flanders bizzley-buzz-buzz busy, it’s hard to spot “the (capital T) Truth” even if it craps on your birthday cake. Yes, Truth: “that old thing.”
For example, there are some really BIG (and OLD) ideas that no longer apply in their traditional form… like Religion , … or Agriculture. Even the idea of “civilization” itself could be modified into “Club Economies.” Turns out that if you’re into Ponerology (the study of evil), Politic (for political purposes), be aware of another thing; Pathocracy. It’s when a bunch of crazy fucks are running things, “a disease of great social movements followed by entire societies, nations, and empires.”
It should not come as a great surprise that Reich says we are responsible. That does not mean it is our fault. Responsibility. Kind of like when your dog craps on somebody else’s carpet. Some of us strive to be big folks, and some of us actually make it. But you can’t be one of the Great folks until you realize the little folk is still inside you. Apathy is a part of all that Poneropolitik… but not entirely. Lobaczewski chafed a bit when Ponerology was called a branch of “theology.” After all, when you use a word like “evil,” what else could it be? Certainly NOT “scientific,” yet that’s exactly what the Polish psychiatrist had in mind. “We are not proposing a ‘theological’ study, but rather a scientific study of what we plainly call evil. The problem is, out materialist scientific culture does not admit that evil actually exists, per se (by itself). The lack of such a science has cost humanity millions of lives and untold suffering.”
Maybe so. Can you replicate, measure and quantify “evil?” If you begin with a visit to Birkenau, you sense that evil definitely exists, and it is somehow quantifiable and measurable. The people who did this were obviously a bunch of sick fucks, and they did a lot of it… to the tune of meters-deep pits of human ashes that emit the “burned meat” smell to this day. But hold on there, ace… the people who loaded and emptied the gas chambers and crematoria were prisoners. The people who maintained the infrastructure of the Death Camps were just “normal” people like you and me who are doing their jobs.
Scratch the secretaries, bureaucrats, wunks and dipdunks running a death camp… not the heavy-lifting people… and you’ll uncover little normal people. A few brutal psychopaths, some as guards and some as prisoners, can supply all the brutality necessary. But it seems overly “relativistic,” doesn’t it, to believe that operating a death camp is no different than running a Sprawl-Mart. So is evil banal or metaphysical? Or could it physically exist as pathology? If the psychopath is evil does that make the carrier part of the disease? What do movements, societies, nations and empires look like without people? The Roman Empire is still around in many forms even though most Imperial Romans are long gone. If you popped in among them, looked around and saw crucified bodies rotting along the roadway, people torn to pieces before cheering crowds, you might say, “hey, a bunch of crazy fucks must be running this place,” and you may or not be right. One thing for sure, you definitely popped into a Pathocracy.
Evil, like any other contagion, evolves an attack to overcome the antibody defenses of its host. As long as it stays on TeeVee, evil is “normal,” and it doesn’t smell like hanging bodies or shriek like Christian dinners. Now the lions are in danger, and it really does not matter if the brutality on TV is live or special-effects. It looks very much the same, or similar enough to keep the simulacrum going like the clockwork crocodiles at Disney World. This particular nasty strain of evil causes people to isolate themselves from nature and each other in individual pods to become food for the matrix. Roll up your windows and turn up the volume, it has you right where it wants you. What does? The Pathocracy’s Poneropolitik. Remember its name, because you’ll be recognizing it on the street very soon. The antidote is to finally admit that a bunch of crazy fucks are running things, and they aint really interested in “creating shareholder value.” They want to eat your brain.
Like all successful plagues, it will probably recede when it runs out of fuel.
