Life in the Empire

....or, how to deal with the inevitable aftermath of the approaching collapse of the US and with it, the World economy. We had a thread like this going good over at the first RBC...remember, the one we all moved to from other cyber places like The Smirking Chimp and Project for the Old American Century ?? Those were the days. We were hot on convincing people the USA is fascist. Life was rough. Nobody listened. We screamed our lungs out, some of us. Still, nobody listened. The Bush bashing took the front seat of most every discussion. No time for reality. No "Blick in die Zukunft" (view in the future). Tough titty, too late, the train is gone and now we have to look around for "a place to sleep". (after a personal experience as a young GI in Frankfurt. Life sucks when you realize you blew it big time by not listening to people's warnings)

Quoting Bo......(from a mini crusade he was on today);

"Well, here's your future discussion topic: The USA is dead.

The body's been burned to a crisp, hung from a bridge, and the limbs are falling off.

The RBC is now making plans to survive the aftermath. That's the reality we need to prepare for now."

So bring 'em on, those survival techniques. Copy & Patse from the other other RBC too. What good will it do us o'er there when the damn place (TribeNet) collapses ?

My spell checker doesn't do french.
Well, you can diss kansas all you want, not that you do, but I couldn't have had a much better time today anywhere else. http://www.cqbluesfest.com/ for 20 dollars an afternoon/eve of acoustic blues, and a whole day, tomorrow of acoustic and amplified. plus you can camp on greg's property, byob, byof, barbq, food vendors, a few hearty arts vendors (us among them). We had to take shelter in the slightly restored Gregg movie theater, when rain loomed, one block away from the outdoor location. Tomorrow it is on greg's property, on a little river, nice stage and equipment. Good music and nice folks. I was never on the track to the rat race like some of you were, so I never had to jump off. Not that it wasn't in my parents and school's plan for me, but from age 8 I knew I would never be in that world. Wish you were here! I think, I do, anyway. As long as you were happy here.
Yes. But, will Joe Walsh be there? ;-)

you will never be happy

were you watching him yesterday, or will you be today? today is the only time you can do anything. i hear lots of good live blues yesterday. today i will hear some more. i used to go to northwest folklife festival for the full time, every year. i couldn't afford to live in seattle, at least in a quiet spot with wide open spaces, or in port townsend after it was discovered, so i gave up folklife. but while i was there, i took advantage of it, and captured the feeling and the sights in my heart and head.

there is a lot of complaining about personal living situations it seems on rbc, now i understand complaining about the political/environmental situation +++, but your personal situation, and i KNOW that i am talking to some of the most intelligent folks online, you actually do have control over. i was in an abusive relationship years ago, and that was the only time i doubted this. extricating myself reinforced my feelings on that. intelligent reality based people may carry the burden of knowing how fucked up things are worldwide, but do have the resources, not money, but real resources, for getting into a situation where they can do what they want. call me naive, but unless you are an disliked quadrapeligic without money, i believe this is true.

i really do hope you are able to hear whomever you like this weekend. aren't you in seattle area?
Hannah truth be told, I was watching that Joe Walsh video when you posted your comment. I thought it was so good, that I wanted to share it with you guys. You just provided the opportunity. I was just teasing you a wee bit--hopefully in good humor.

The Folk Life festival is this weekend. I used to go it every year and enjoyed it a lot. But these days, I'd rather avoid the crowds.--being an old geezer and all...
old geezer..........

;-)

I for one am glad you mentioned Joe W. Brought a smile to my face. Oh and on the bye, why go in person when you can enjoy in persona....or do ya wanna? Fauna? Got some onya?
Loved the James Gang when I was a young buck.

So, you think I should go to the folk life festival in costume, eh?

OK, where's that damn Marilyn Manson costume? That'll freak out those pot-smokin' hippies...
pot-smokin' hippies...

where ?
I don't think the 'complaining about personal living situations' here is a problem ... even the most intelligent folks online need a safe place to let off steam amongst friends and grumble a little if they feel so inclined. It's nice that rbc provides that space. It's true what you say about us all having real resources for coping in a fucked up world ... but some days aren't diamonds ... and sometimes the luck of the draw plays as much a role as utilizing the resources and when the luck runs a little dry it's nice to have a safe place to cry.
An interesting update to last weekend's Folklife festival:

Gunfire shakes mellow Folklife Festival

Read the story and weep. The thugs are everywhere now. If you don't have them in your neighborhood--be happy. But, if you watch the local Seattle news, this is nothing new or out of the ordinary. And it very much symbolizes the collapse that has gripped most urban centers.

Any clusterf#ck one attends these days opens oneself up to the very real possibility that you could be victimized. Maybe things are different in Kansas. If so, I envy you. Seattle sux.
My neighborhood is my town, 450 pop. The bluesfestival on sunday was great, I don't know yet how many people. The only weird thing was one guy on a motorcycle, not really a biker, more like an exec on a bike, who got 4 inches from my face when I asked him to park on the outside of the festival area, where nearly everyone else was parking happily. He was really rude, left with the bike, then came back and parked there again as if to say, fub. Anyway the organizers supported me, a vendor and volunteer, and soon asked all bikes to be removed to the outside. He then came back from where he was hiding, the music hadn't started yet, and moved. He was the only really rude person I encountered, a few drunks but they weren't going anywhere, probably passed out in the mud when it rained later.

Things are different here, but of course Wichita and Kansas City have crime, too. We aren't as crowded here though, even Wichita doesn't have that big city feel. I only lived in Seattle for 2 years, that was my promise, and then moved to Port Townsend, mid 80's. Then it got too much for me and moved to Kansas. My daughter moved to Seattle a few years ago, she is a nanny there, 21yo. No car, rides bus everywhere. She is thinking about moving back east for awhile, which I support because no matter what happens I think it is a good idea to broaden your horizons while you are young. She spent two summers as a nanny in Bali, too. I have made sure all my children will have a home here in Kansas, if they want. Something I never could have done in WA.

I can see how Folklife would have changed in the way they describe. It was nice while it lasted. Too bad, makes me very sad.
There's a Red House over yonder and Joe Walsh has been there. Way cool!

Sedan, Kansas, festival? And I thought Kansas was dead. Lemme see, if I were still there where I once was, I would ride to Silverdale, Maple City, up the 241st road to get on 166, through Taussig to Cedar Vale, through Wauneta to get there. Never been in that neck of the woods. Not that I can remember.

This is where I was yesterday : http://www.magic-bike-ruedesheim.com/

Not sure if I'll vere go back...for such an event.

Just sittin' here waitin' for the garden to grow is way more fun. Cheeper too. Gas is up around €1,54 a litre. Crows are smart. They don't need gas to get around. Friggin' flyin' dinosaurs they are.
