Life in the Empire

They keep coming out of the woodwork like cockroaches. They eat away at the foundation of civilization. They lie, cheat and steal. They think the world owes them something they don't deserve. They get away with murder.

Who are they?

"Avoid rather than check. Check rather than hurt. Hurt rather than maim. Maim rather than kill. For all life is precious and cannot be replaced." – Master Kan

yeah... the "non-violent martial arts" myth.  They could have avoided this with the use of Slipcraft... and dance that nurtures the Spirit (the fifth sacred thing).  It has all the dangers of turning into a bad remake of Billy Jack (which was bad enough to begin with).

A friend of mine is a master swordsman and fight choreographer - and a pacifist, vegetarian, Buddhist, reformed alcoholic.  He was pretty honest about his art - it is about killing your opponent with the least effort.

"Non-violent" martial arts are less militaristic in their goals and there is more aesthetic valuing but, bottom line, you can't be an accomplished martial artist if you can not kick butt - and you don't get to that level without having the drive towards gaining those skills.

I am not a violent man, and even as a kid I avoided fights but, when I was training capoeira I had the sick pleasure/guilt when the techniques I was training proved to be effective when I connected and my training partner collapsed in a heap.  I quit when I realized that, in order to reach the highest levels I was going to have to go to Brazil and get my ass kicked/kick others' asses for a year or two.  I realized that that wasn't the guy I wanted to be.

What is learned from "martial arts:"  the objective is not to kill your attacker.  The objective is to stop the attack.  Prequel is to avoid the attack... and the overture to that is not being there to begin with... slipcraft.  It would be a more prescient form of Aikido... "the art of not being there."  Many of us will be practicing this during the die-off.

There are dozens of ways to re-write that script without a buncha jumpin Billy Jacks.

Thinking of shirts, for some years I've got mine from this lot, Bishopston, and find their stuff good and wearing finely, being organic helps I think.  Buying their cloth too, for making things I cannot buy.  Much of it is handwoven, and that gives it a greater variety of density and touch, and is so very pleasing.

My other favourite clothes makers are in Syria, so no more of those beautifully cut trousers because of sanctions, I suppose.  Couldn't buy a pair in what was that colour, did it have a name?   I discovered them when I was looking for strong long skirts you can stride in.  Still prefer floorlength tiers that billow around when you sit down like clouds.

I don't know the meaning of this aberration. But it makes me smile.

National Lawyers Guild Files FOIA Requests Seeking Evidence of Federal Role in Occupy Crackdown

With Congress no longer performing its sworn role of defending the US Constitution, the National Lawyers Guild Mass Defense Committee and the Partnership for Civil Justice today filed requests under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) asking the Department of Justice, the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI, the CIA and the National Parks Service to release "all their information on the planning of the coordinated law enforcement crackdown on Occupy protest encampments in multiple cities over the course of recent days and weeks."

Lizzie Phelan has been for a walk in the park, bless her dear cotton socks.

Right on Phelan down to the cotton sox.  #occupy for dummies: a rant leading to an explanation of why RP is full of poo.
